* Police officer injured during Hanwella protest dies

Mar 16, Colombo: A police officer who was injured today when a tree cut by the protesters in Hanwella fell on him succumbed to his injuries, the media reports from Colombo said.

The Officer-In-Charge (OIC) of Borella Police Prasad Siriwardhana was injured when the tree fell on him during the protest staged by the residents of Hanwella area today. He was admitted to the Avissawella Hospital where he died, the reports said.

Police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse the protesters who were demanding the closure of a rubber factory that they claim pollute the water in the area and blocking the main High Level Road and causing heavy traffic congestion.

The police have arrested around 20 protesters.
