* Sri Lanka's Elections Commissioner seeks IGP's assistance to curb election related violence

Mar 15, Colombo: Election Commissioner of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Deshapriya has requested the Inspector General of Police (IGP) N. K. Ilangakoon to provide assistance to address election violence in the Western and Southern Provinces during the election period.

Deshapriya has told English daily that party leaders had expressed concern over the increasing number of violent incidents reported during campaigning.

He has said that party leaders were assured that immediate action would be taken to put an end to such incidents.

The Elections Commissioner has requested the IGP to provide additional security personnel to be posted to violence prone areas.

It is learnt that the Kesbewa electorate is leading in the number of complaints of election law violations.

The Elections Commissioner has however expressed hope that the situation would calm down in a few days.
