* President hands over 50 luxury buses to run on Sri Lanka's expressways
Thu, Mar 13, 2014, 01:22 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Mar 13, Colombo: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa Wednesday handed over 50 luxury buses to the state owned Sri Lanka Transport Board to ply on the country's expressways.

At a ceremony held at the Galle Face Green in Colombo, symbolizing the transfer of the buses from the Finance and Planning Ministry to the Transport Ministry, President Rajapaksa handed over the keys of the buses to the Minister of Transport Kumar Welgama.

The government imported the luxury buses for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting held in Sri Lanka last November. The buses will be given to 50 selected depots to be used for passenger transport on the expressways.

The buses are to be deployed on routes between Maharagama - Galle and Kaduwela - Galle on the Southern expressway and the newly opened Colombo Outer Circular Highway.

Some of these buses will be deployed for transport to Matara after the second phase of the Southern Expressway opens later this month.

Minister S.B. Dissanayake, Deputy Minister Rohana Kumara Dissanayake, Secretary to the Transport Ministry Dhammika Perera, and the Chairman of Sri Lanka Transport Board Sashi Welgama were also present at the occasion.
