* Complaint against inaction of Sri Lanka police regarding abduction of Wanathamulla resident
Fri, Mar 7, 2014, 12:26 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Mar 06, Colombo: A residents group called the Organization for the Protection of Houses in Wanathamulla has lodged a complaint against the abduction of one of its activists who was leading the struggle against the eviction of people.

The complaint was lodged in Human Rights Commission against non-implementation of law regarding the abduction of Sunil Samaradheera.

Samaradheera, a resident of 34th estate of Wanathamulla was abducted by an unknown gang in mid-February and later released when the residents of Wanathamulla protested blocking the Baseline Road, one of the main roadways to Colombo city.

The organization says that police has not investigated the complaint by Sunil Samaradheera and the culprits have not been arrested so far.

A senior police official however said the abduction of the resident was stage managed by several politicians for political motives.

Wanathamulla is one of Colombo's largest shanty areas and the government has undertaken a project to remove the shanties from the capital city as a part of the Colombo Metropolitan Development Program. The residents in Wanathamulla have objected to the government's move and filed a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition at the Human Rights Commission against the demolition of their houses.
