* Sri Lanka Army suspends three disabled army personnel involved in robbery

Mar 05, Colombo: Sri Lanka Army with immediate effect has suspended the services of three disabled Army personnel including an officer over their involvement in a robbery.

The three Army personnel were arrested by the Special Investigations Unit of the Mirihana Police and subsequently detained for their alleged involvement in a robbery of cash and jewellery worth over Rs 1 million from a shop in Padukka.

The suspects, Lieutenant M.H.A.K Rupasinghe, Private A.K.Y Sathyakumara and Private R.D.P Priyashantha, all three disabled Army personnel, were working in an Army welfare project, the Army said.

Gangodawila Magistrate has ordered the suspects to be detained for 72 hours after the arrests.

Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police has commenced a parallel investigation into the incident and assured its cooperation to the Police for further action, the Army said.

Army Commander Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake has directed the authorities to immediately suspend their services, pending further disciplinary actions on the recommendations of the Sri Lanka Corps of Military Police and Directorate of Legal Services.
