Mar 04, Colombo: An elections monitor in Sri Lanka has complained to the elections authorities that several governing party members of the Southern Provincial Council, who are currently contesting at the forthcoming election, have taken monies from institutions under the provincial authorities to be used for their respective elections campaigns.
The People's Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) had lodged a complaint on the matter with the Galle district election authorities.
PAFFREL Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi has said the provincial authority had made the allocations just prior to the dissolution of the Southern Provincial Council and that it is inappropriate to make such allocations ahead of dissolution of the Council.
He has explained that each candidate had surreptitiously acted to get the monies released for project proposals put forward by them and had even drawn cheques under the names of different individuals.
However, Galle District Deputy Elections Commissioner Bimal Indrajith has said that the Chief Secretary of the Southern Province has been directed to investigate the complaint on the matter.
