Mar 03, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) says the party would not in any place put the country in any difficulty at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) sessions in Geneva.

UNP Leadership Council Chairman, Karu Jayasuriya said that no one can take the President of the country or any other person before an international tribunal since Sri Lanka is not a signatory to the Rome Convention of 2012.

Speaking at the ceremony to commemorate the 23rd death anniversary of the late General Ranjan Wijerathna, Jayasuriya said the UNP will not act in a manner that would jeopardize the country's independence.

He added that the UNP was instrumental in bringing independence to the country and would work to safeguard it.
