* Sri Lanka Election Commissioner suspends distribution of relief to tea small holders in Galle district
Sun, Mar 2, 2014, 10:22 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Mar 02, Colombo: The Election Commissioner of Sri Lanka Mahinda Deshapriya today ordered the Chairman of Tea Small Holdings Authority to suspend distribution of relief to tea small holders in Galle district in Southern Province.

The Election Commissioner took this measure to prevent an election candidate getting unnecessary advantage from the concession in the district at the upcoming provincial polls on March 28.

The ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Galle district candidate Dulshan Kariyawasam is the son of the Chairman of the Tea Small Holding Authority Noel Padmasiri Kariyawasam.

Noel Padmasiri Kariyawasam is a former MP of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. He is actively supporting his son's election campaign.

The Election Commissioner said that he had received a complaint that distribution of relief for the tea small holders had been manipulated for political mileage of the Chairman's son.
