Sun, Mar 2, 2014, 12:33 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Mar 02, Colombo: The government of Sri Lanka plans to construct a modern prison facility in the Hambantota District in the Southern Province as a measure to ease the overcrowding in the country's major prisons.

Prison Reforms and Rehabilitation Ministry has said the new prison that can house about 1,000 inmates will be fully equipped with a gymnasium, indoor sports complex and better sanitary facilities.

The new prison complex will be constructed on a 58-acre plot of land in the Angunukolapelessa area.

The Stage I of the prison project, that is estimated to cost Rs. 50 million, will commence next month and is expected to be completed in 22 months.

Prisons Department Spokesperson, Gamini Kulatunge told the media that the prisoners will also have communication facilities and new telephone booths with transparent glass barriers.

He explained that most of the prisons in the country were built during the colonial rule in the center of several cities and now the congested prisons have to be shifted to more spacious areas.
