June 29, Colombo: Sri Lanka Election Commissioner's Department has decided to substantially increase the deposit for the Presidential candidates.

Election Secretariat is considering to increase the deposit up to one million rupees, sources at the Secretariat said.

At present, the deposit for a presidential candidate is only Rs. 50,000.

The Election Commissioner's Department is now considering proposing the amendments to the law so the deposit may be increased.

The final decision is to be taken after discussions with the secretaries of the political parties.

The Election laws were recently amended to increase the deposit for a local government election independent candidate from Rs. 250 to Rs. 20,000.
