June 24, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Department of Census and Statistics has planned to conduct an economic census for ascertaining the Social, Civil or Economic conditions of the population of Sri Lanka.
Director General of the Department D.C.A Gunawardena said this is the first time that Sri Lanka organizes an economic census and such censuses are being conducted in developed countries.
Agriculture including animal husbandry, Industry, Trade and Service sectors of the Economic Census are carried out under the provision of the Census Ordinance.
The Economic Census will be conducted under four phases for the four sectors. Around 15,000 officials will be deployed for the agriculture census. Relevant training has provided to these officials to visit households and collect information.
The Director General of Census and Statistics has been appointed as the superintendent and who is charged with the responsibility of conducting the Economic Census. He is assisted by a team of senior officers who have been designated as Deputy Superintendents and of the Economic Census by a special Gazette notification.
Meanwhile, the Director General said that the census on missing, death and handicapped and property damages conducted under the instruction of the LLRC has been completed. The data is being evaluated at present and the report will be presented to the relevant authorities in the next few weeks.
