* Sri Lanka police deploy 15 teams to investigate communal clashes

June 23, Colombo: Sri Lanka police had appointed 15 special police teams to conduct investigations into the recent communal clashes that took place in the southern coastal towns of Aluthgama and Beruwala.

Police had assigned five teams from the Criminal Investigations Department and the Colombo Crimes Division to conduct the investigations, national news agency Lankapuwath reported.

Police Media Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that with the new 15 teams, altogether 20 Police teams are currently conducting investigations to bring the culprits to the book.

Police further said that 58 persons have been arrested and 35 have been remanded over the violent incidents in Aluthgama and Beruwala.

The Police Headquarters have issued orders to OICs, deputy police officers in charge of the Western Province and senior officers who are in charge of the investigative teams to take immediate measures to arrest perpetrators, irrespective of their posts or positions.

Meanwhile, Police have requested public to submit any pictures or audio visual material which can be used to identify the culprits.
