* Sri Lankan President to open oil storage facilities at Hambantota port and airport tomorrow

June 21, Colombo: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa will officially declare open the oil storage facilities established at the Magampura Mahinda Rajapaksa Port in Hambantota and the Mattala International Airport on Sunday, June 22.

Oil Storage Terminal, set up according to International standards, at the Mattala International Airport will supply fuel to aircraft arriving at the airport while the oil tank farm at the Hambantota Port will supply fuel for ships arriving at the Harbor.

The fully computerized Oil Storage Terminal at the airport constructed at a cost of US$ 40 million has the capacity to store 3 million liters of aircraft fuel, according to the Managing Director of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation Susantha Silva.

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority said following the opening of the oil tank farm at the Hambantota Port, fuel bunkering operations will commence at the newly built fuel bunkering terminal.

The oil tank farm, comprising 14 tanks, was constructed at the Hambantota Port with an investment of US$ 76 million.

The farm has eight tanks for fuel bunkering facilities for vessels, three tanks for aero fuel and three tanks for storing LP gas. The 14 tanks will also have an overall capacity of 80,000m3.

The tank farm will initially handle 55,000 tonnes of shipping fuel with eight tanks and is expected to add further 100,000 tonnes under the second phase.

It is envisaged that many of the 4,500 oil tankers would anchor at Hambantota for bunkering, ship repairing and also to purchase food, water, medical supplies as well as logistics.

The general public will be allowed to visit the harbor premises from tomorrow morning and they will be able to watch the process of supplying oil to ships during the afternoon, the state run radio said.

The Ports Authority has also taken measures stage a live musical concert for the public at the Ruhunu Magampura port tomorrow evening.
