Thu, Jun 19, 2014, 11:48 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

June 19, Colombo: The government plans to dissolve the Uva Provincial Council next month, before the end of its term, a local media report said.

The Uva PC will be dissolved in July 2014 before the end of its term, according to Deputy Minister Local Government and Provincial Councils Indika Bandaranayake, the Lankapuvath reported.

The term of the Uva provincial council is due to end on September 26 but according to the Minister, the government plans to dissolve the council next month and hold the election either in August or September.

Minister Bandaranayake has said that the government is confident in its decision to carry out a speedy dissolution of council and hold elections ahead of time.

Sri Lanka's ruling party United People's Freedom Alliance secured a comfortable victory at the last elections for the Council held in August 2009.

Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) hopeful of faring better at the Uva Provincial Council election has already commenced preparation work for the polls.
