* Former chairman of Sri Lanka University Teachers' Association gets death threats

June 18, Colombo: The university teachers' trade union in Sri Lanka, Federation of University Teachers' Associations (FUTA) complained today that the family of one of the leaders of the FUTA has received death threats.

The former chairman of FUTA Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri, the Dean of the History Department of Colombo University has received death threats several times last night over the phone.

Dr. Dewasiri said that his wife had also received similar threats.

An unidentified group has threatened to throw acid at the academics' daughter who studies in a Colombo school.

Current FUTA chairman Dr. Chandragupta Thenuwara said a complaint has been lodged with the Inspector General of Police in writing regarding the death threats.
