* Journalists attacked at violence-stricken southern town in Sri Lanka

June 17, Colombo: A group of journalists of Sunday Leader and Irudina newspapers complained to Cinnamon Gardens police today that they had been attacked by a group of unidentified men when they went to report the communal violence in Beruwala electorate.

The journalists complained that a mob threatened and attacked them yesterday when they had gone from Welipenna interchange on Southern Expressway towards Dharga Town to report on the situation there. The road they were traveling had been blocked by a felled tree.

Both men and women, armed with clubs and swords had questioned them and attacked the driver of the van they were traveling, the journalists and the van driver complained to the police.

The majority of the journalists were ethnic Sinhalese and according to the journalists, the mob that attacked them was also Sinhalese.
