Tue, Jun 17, 2014, 09:55 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

June 17, Matugama: Sinhala nationalist mob has attacked an opposition legislator today for helping the Muslims who were under siege from the Sinhala mobs in the troubled southern towns.

Main opposition United National Party (UNP) Kalutara District MP Palitha Thewarapperuma was attacked by a mob today at Welipenna in his Matugama electorate as he was involved in rescuing Muslims who were under siege from the Sinhala nationalist mob.

The mobs attacked the MP and damaged his vehicle whilst the MP escaped from the mob without harm, sources close to the MP said.

MP Thevarapperuma's membership in UNP has been suspended after an attempt by him to assault the party leader. Recently, the UNP appointed another person as the electoral organizer of Matugama.

A group of UNP MPs visited the affected areas in the Beruwala electorate today and met with the people victimized by communal violence.
