June 16, Colombo: A Sri Lankan traffic policeman who works on the Southern Expressway today lodged a complaint in the Human Rights Commission against a Deputy Minister for obstructing his duty at the Kottawa interchange of the Southern Expressway.
Police constable Suminda Saman last month issued a spot fine to the driver of the Deputy Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade Hemal Gunasekara for speeding on the expressway.
A heated argument has ensued after issuing the spot fine and both the Deputy Minister and the police officer complained to the authorities against each other.
Following the incident the police officer was immediately transferred to another interchange on the expressway. Two weeks later he was attacked by an unknown gang and his vehicle was set on fire.
The Deputy Minister declined the charge against him over the attack.
The investigations regarding the Minister's alleged obstruction of duty led to discover that he was using a vehicle which bore a fake number. Police had now sought advice of the Attorney General to file charges against that offense.
