* Sri Lanka prioritizes prevention and treatment of chronic kidney disease

June 06, Colombo: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa today ordered the officials of the Health sector and other relevant sectors to cooperate and find ways to prevent and effectively treat the Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) that is plaguing the farmers of the island.

The President today held detailed discussion with officials about the issue when he me the Presidential Task Force appointed to handle the issue at the Temple Trees.

He received a briefing from the officials about initiatives already being implemented and the issues that still need to be addressed.

The President pointed out the importance of the Indigenous Medicine and the Western Medicine acting in close collaboration to find a cure to the CKD prevailing in the country.

He instructed officials of all relevant sectors to work together and prioritize the national issue to eliminate the disease that is mostly affecting the farmers working in the paddy fields.

He said a prevention programme should be implemented island wide equally not only in the North Central Province but also in other parts of the country including the North and East.

He pointed out that utilization of agrochemicals is a major reason for the kidney diseases and pointed out the need to gradually reduce the use of such chemicals to prevent the menace.

Ministers Athauda Seneviratne, Basil Rajapaksa, Dinesh Gunawardena, Bandula Gunawardena, Tissa Karaliyadde, Felix Perera, S. M. Chandrasena, and Salinda Dissanayake, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga, Secretary to Prime Minister S. M. Samarasekera, and Secretary to the health Ministry Mrs. Sudharma Karunaratne were also present.
