June 06, Colombo: A high level Sri Lankan business delegation led by the Minister of Industry and Commerce, Rishad Bathiyutheen has headed to China to attend the China's largest trade expo that will open today at the Kunming International Convention and Exhibition Centre, in Yunnan Province.
The 2nd China - South Asia Expo and the 22nd Kunming Import and Export Commodities Fair will be held in Kunming, Yunnan Province from June 6 to 10, 2014. The event is jointly hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China and the People's Government of Yunnan.
The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Embassy in China has organized a Sri Lanka pavilion at the Kunming International Convention and Exhibition Centre for Sri Lanka's manufacturers and exporters.
The EDB functioning under Minister Bathiyutheen is facilitating one of the biggest B2B delegations to Kunming with over 118 Sri Lankan business representatives who will join the Minister and his five other officials.
The 118 companies and businesses facilitated by EDB represent such diverse product and service sectors as tea, gem and jewelry, arts, crafts and handicrafts, coconut fiber, Ayurvedic and herbal products, and even gem cutting and polishing.
Sri Lanka has been taking part in this event since 2007 when it was held for the first time in Beijing. In addition to a mass of domestic buyers and over 1,000 Chinese exhibitors, previous each fair attracted about 4,000 to 6,000 overseas guests from around fifty countries. The accumulated contracts signed for trade and investment during the fairs are estimated about US$ 25 billion.
Sri Lanka's bilateral trade with China has passed the US$ 3 billion mark. According to the Department of Commerce, China's trade with Sri Lanka stood at US $ 3.084 million in 2013.
