Thu, Jun 5, 2014, 01:34 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

June 04, Mannar: A court in Sri Lanka on Wednesday ordered the release of 29 Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on Sunday when they were illegally engaged in fishing in Sri Lankan waters northwest of Thalaimannar.

The Mannar Magistrate's Court has ordered to release the fishermen from Tamil Nadu arrested on June 01 near Katchatheevu islet along with their six mechanized boats.

Mannar Magistrate Aanandhi Kanagarathinam, ordered their release today after the fishermen were produced in court, Press Trust of India reported.

However, the magistrate has ordered to detain their six boats as they had used banned nets for fishing.

The Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on June 03 ordered the release of the 29 Indian fishermen as a goodwill gesture.

The 29 fishermen, along with four other Tamil Nadu fishermen rescued by the Sri Lankan Navy when their boat developed a mechanical failure on June 1 are expected to be handed over to Indian Coast Guard at International Maritime Boundary Line tomorrow.
