July 04, Colombo: Sri Lanka Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said today that the Election Department has not officially announced the redistribution of seats in the Uva Provincial Council yet and it is considering to issue a statement regarding the matter next week.
The Election Department has decided to reduce three seats of Badulla district of Uva Province and add them to the Moneragala district.
However, the main opposition United National Party opposed the Election Department's decision to redistribute the council seats in the Council which is expected to be dissolved soon in preparation for elections to the Council in September.
A group of UNP members met the Elections Commissioner at his office in Rajagiriya this morning, in order to discuss the issue.
UNP Parliamentarian Joseph Michael Perera who participated in the discussion said they in writing lodged a protest against the mechanism used to calculate the redistribution of seats. The party said they are prepared to take legal action against the move.
Deputy Election Commissioner M.M. Mohammed said earlier that the seats in the Provincial Councils are distributed as one for each 40,000 voters and one per each 10 square kilometers.
UNP parliamentarian Harin Fernando, who is slated to contest as the UNP Chief Minister candidate for the Province, protesting the redistribution alleged that there is a conspiracy to prevent UNP gaining power in the Provincial Council and the move is aimed at preventing the victory of the UNP.
The Election Commissioner however said that the Department had not taken a decision yet and they will discuss the issue with the Attorney General's Department and make the announcement next week.
