July 04, Colombo: The UNICEF has planned several activities to mark the 25th Anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).

To mark the 25th anniversary UNICEF Sri Lanka in partnership with Canon - Metropolitan and Rotaract Shutterbug Friday launched a photography competition called 'Children in Focus', an initiative by the Rotaract Club of Panadura.

The theme for the photo competition is 'Children of Sri Lanka: life - moments - rights'.

"The 25th Anniversary of the CRC is a key milestone for the UN, Governments, our partners as well as children across the world. In Sri Lanka we have a lot to celebrate in terms of progress towards the survival, development, protection and participation of children. This photo competition will put those in focus and we are excited to see the photo competition entries in the coming months" said Ms. Una McCauley, Representative of UNICEF Sri Lanka.

The competition has 3 categories under its theme 'Children of Sri Lanka: life - moments - rights'; Open pictorial category (colour), Open pictorial category (monochrome) and Children's category (colour).

The deadline for entries of the photo competition is 15 September 2014.

The winning photographs will be featured in UNICEF Sri Lanka's calendar and visibility items for 2015.

The winner of the Open pictorial category (colour) will receive a Canon EOS 1200D digital S.L.R camera and the two winners in open pictorial category (monochrome) and children's category (colour) categories will receive Canon G16 Prosumer digital cameras.

The winner's school/institution will receive a photo printer from Canon. Top 3 winners in each category will also receive 3 month course scholarship to Canon-Metropolitan Photo Academy.

Mr. Taslim Rahman, Managing Director of Metropolitan the sole distributor for Canon in Sri Lanka stated, "We are happy to be a partner of this project to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the CRC! We believe that photography is an excellent medium to share stories and experiences and it is an ideal tool at a time of celebration. A picture can speak a thousand words and we are happy to empower it".

Speaking at the launch, President of the Rotaract Club of Panadura, Yasasvi Salgado said through Rotaract Shutterbug they have worked with many children and young people over the past 3 years.

"As a group of youth who are passionate about photography for social good, we are pleased to work in partnership with UNICEF to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the CRC. We would like to extend an invitation to all to send in your entries for this competition to make this truly a celebration of rights of children in Sri Lanka" said Salgado.
