July 03, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party today opposed the Election Department's decision to redistribute the council seats in the Uva Provincial Council.
The Department of Election Commissioner has decided to reduce three seats of Badulla district of Uva Province and add them to Moneragala district.
Accordingly, the number of seats in Badulla district reduces to 18 while Moneragala district will have 14 seats.
Uva Provincial Council is to be dissolved this month and the election is expected in September.
UNP MP Harin Fernando who is slated to contest as the major opposition United National Party (UNP) Chief Minister candidate said the move was unfair and aimed at preventing UNP winning Badulla district and gaining power in the Provincial Council.
The MP said that 609,066 voters in the Badulla district will have only 19 seats with the bonus seat while about 330,000 voters in Moneragala district will have 15 representatives with the bonus seat.
Deputy Election Commissioner M.M. Nohammed said the seats in the Provincial Councils are distributed as per one for each 40,000 voters and one per each 10 square kilometers.
The MP said that a UNP delegation would discuss the matter with the Election Commissioner today.
