* Three students of Sri Lanka's Rajarata University arrested for taking Vice Chancellor hostage

July 03, Colombo: Three student leaders of the Rajarata University senior student association have been arrested for taking the Vice Chancellor and several others in the staff hostage last week.

The student leaders were arrested on charges of unruly restrain and the wrongful confinement of the vice-chancellor and other academic staff of the Rajarata University, Police media spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana said

The spokesperson added that a further 37 connected with the incident have been identified and already that statements have been recorded from 20 students.

Meanwhile, the University which was reopened Monday for academic activities was closed again until further notice as the academic and non-academic staff refused to work for fear of their safety. Only the medical faculty will remain open.

Applied Science, Management studies and Social Science faculties held in Mihinthale, and the Agricultural Faculty in Puliyankulam were closed Wednesday.

Teachers Union of the Rajarata University said that they will not conduct academic and administrative activities as the situation still remains volatile and threatening to their lives.

Students residing in the hostels have been ordered to vacate premises before 4.00 PM today.

It has been reported that the Rajarata university administration has decided to dissolve all the student unions including the Main student's union and faculty unions.
