* University student leaders of Sri Lanka's Ruhunu University attacked
Tue, Jul 1, 2014, 10:55 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 01, Matara: Sri Lanka's university students' union, Inter University Students' Federation (IUSF) says that a group of thugs have attacked eight student union leaders of the Ruhunu University.

Issuing a statement the IUSF said the students were attacked as they were traveling to their lodgings in a bus around 7 p.m. yesterday.

The injured students have been admitted to the Hospital.

Earlier this month also the students were attacked for protesting against the government's plan to hold the Deyata Kirula mega development exhibition in the university premises.

A group of around 500 people armed with clubs forcibly entered the Ruhuna University and attacked the students and eight students were injured in the attack.

The students accused the former Sri Lankan cricket captain turned Deputy Minister Sanath Jayasuriya for conniving with the attackers.

However, Jayasuriya rejected the allegation but said he only met the protesting people.

No arrest has been made over the latest attack. The university had been closed indefinitely following the earlier attack.

The government changed the earlier plan to hold the exhibition in the University premises and moved the venue for the exhibition to a location near the Kamburugamuwa hospital complex in the planned new city of Matara due to logistic issues.
