* Section of Sri Lanka's main prison in Colombo to be relocated to deep south

Jan 31, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government has taken measures to relocate a section of the country's main Welikada Prison located in the Colombo city center to a location in the deep south.

The Cabinet has granted approval to a proposal put forward by the Minister of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Chandrasiri Gajadeera to relocate a section of the Welikada Prison to Eraminiyaya in Angunakolapelessa of the Hambantota district.

The Tangalle Prison will also be relocated to the same site.

The Cabinet has given approval for the Minister to award the contracts for construction as recommended by the Cabinet Appointed Procurement Committee (CAPC).

The government plans to move the overcrowded Welikada prison from the capital Colombo to free the prime land the prison complex is now occupying in the hear t of the city.

The Prison complex is located on 40 acres of prime land that has been assessed at a minimum value of Rs. 15 billion.
