* Nominations for elections to Sri Lanka's Western and Southern provincial councils accepted from today

Jan 30, Colombo: Nominations for the elections to two provincial councils in Sri Lanka will be accepted from today, the Elections Secretariat said.

Nominations for the Western and Southern Provincial Council Elections will be accepted at the district offices from today until 12 noon on the 6th of February. Deposits will be accepted until 12 noon on the 5th of February.

The Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya told media yesterday that only authorized persons will be allowed to enter the nomination centers.

Accordingly, four members from an accepted political party and three members from an independent group will be permitted to enter.

The Election Commissioner said the date of elections will be announced after considering the number of nominations accepted. However, it will be a Saturday, he said.

According to the Election Commissioner 55,000 officials will be deployed for election duties and out of them 5,000 will be in charge of polling booths and 50,000 officials will be in charge of counting ballots.
