* Former Sri Lanka opposition party councilor arrested for assaulting police officer

Jan 22, Colombo: A former United National Party (UNP) provincial councilor was arrested today for allegedly assaulting a police officer.

Former Western Provincial Councilor Shirantha Amarasekera was arrested Wednesday was for assaulting a police sergeant in the Weligampitya area of Kandana, the Police Media Spokesman's office said.

Following his arrest, the Councilor was presented in the Negombo Magistrate Court and placed in remand custody until 29th January.

The injured police officer of the Police Environment Unit was admitted to the Ragama Teaching Hospital, the police said.
