* Presidential commission probing disappearances in Sri Lanka concludes sittings in Kilinochchi

Jan 21, Kilinochchi: The Presidential Commission appointed to investigate alleged abductions or disappearances of persons resident in Sri Lanka's Northern and Eastern provinces during the period from1990 to 2009 concluded its sittings in Kilinochchi today.

The inaugural session of the Commission appointed in August last year met at the Kilinochchi District Secretariat Office from January 19th till 21st to investigate in to the complaints regarding the incidents of missing persons.

All people from the area who have submitted complaints to the Commission have been notified to appear for an independent investigation into their complaints.

The Commission has recorded evidence from 76 witnesses in connection with the complaints, Secretary to the commission H.W Gunadasa said. In addition, 106 more complaints have been received by the presidential commission.

The Commission had reportedly received 11,500 complaints on disappearances and 7,500 of them are from the Northern and Eastern Provinces.

Public Sittings will be held in all Granma Niladhari Divisions in the Northern and Eastern Provinces to hear all the complaints.

The commission will start investigations with regard to the cases of disappeared persons in Mullaitivu district next.

Establishment of the Commission to investigate the disappearances is one of the recommendations by the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission.
