* Sri Lankan President attends Zayed Future Energy Prize awards ceremony

Jan 21, Abu Dhabi: Sri Lanka's President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who arrived in Abu Dhabi Monday for a one-day visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), attended the 2014 Zayed Future Energy Prize Awards Ceremony yesterday evening at the Emirates Palace Hotel.

Many other leaders from countries within the region and other parts of the world were also present on the occasion.

The Zayed Future Energy Prize is awarded with the aim of encouraging innovation in the field of sustainable and alternative energy sources for future purposes. The award, being presented this year for the sixth time, is named after the founder of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

The Prize was given to nine winners for their outstanding achievements and excellence in advancing renewable energy and sustainability worldwide. It recognizes companies, organizations, schools and individuals across the world that have made significant contributions to the future of renewable energy and sustainability.

The collective value of the annual awards given in five categories is US$ 4 million.

Before returning to Sri Lanka later this evening, President Rajapaksa will hold bilateral discussion with several high ranking officials of the country. During the discussions, attention will be drawn to further enhancing relations between the two nations in identified sectors.

Minister of External Affairs Prof. G.L. Peiris and Monitoring MP of the Ministry of External Affairs Sajin de Vass Gunawardena are accompanying the President in this tour.
