* Tamil Alliance of Sri Lanka suspends membership of 7 local councilors for defeating budget

Jan 18, Colombo: Sri Lanka's major Tamil party, Tamil national Alliance (TNA) has suspended the membership of seven local government members for voting to defeat the budgets of their local council.

The party membership of 7 TNA members of the Walikamam-East Pradeshiya Sabha in Jaffna has been temporarily suspended following the defeat of the local council's budget.

The budget of the TNA-controlled Walikamam-East Pradeshiya Sabha was defeated recently by three votes with 9 voting in favor while 12 opposing.

The TNA Provincial Councilor M K Sivajilingam has said that the party has obtained written statements from its members who were suspended and disciplinary action will be taken against them.
