* Sri Lanka elections monitor calls on poll candidates to hand in asset declarations along with nominations
Fri, Jan 17, 2014, 07:49 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 17, Colombo: An elections monitor in Sri Lanka has called on all candidates at the Western and Southern Provincial Council elections to hand in their assets declarations along with their nominations.

The People's Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) appealed to all contestants to declare their assets along with the nominations and open them for the public scrutiny.

Executive Director of PAFFREL, Rohana Hettiarachchi said the candidates should also be clear about their policies and clearly inform the people of their plans if elected to the respective councils.

He said it was difficult to understand why candidates who claim to contest to help the country and people are unable to hand in their assets declaration as required by the law.

"The Elections Commissioner on many occasions has had to send reminders even after the elections requesting for the assets declarations," Hettiarachchi said.
