Jan 17, Colombo: The Sri Lankan government has requested the French authorities to hand over the Sri Lankan Tamil sought recently arrested by the French police in Paris when he walked into a French police station to lodge a complaint.

The suspect identified as Tharmalingam Jeyanthan was employed in Paris and he was arrested when he walked into a police station in eastern Paris to lodge a complaint on poor working conditions at his employment.

The French police had recognized Tharmalingam as a subject of an international arrest warrant for terrorism and arrested him.

However, he was released on bail when he was produced in a Paris court.

He is suspected of carrying out series of explosions while he was a member of the defeated Tamil Tiger terrorist organization Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). In one such attack on a bus near Sambuddhathwa Jayanthi Temple in Colombo 11 persons were killed, the police said.

Sri Lanka police Terrorism Investigation Department suspects that Tharmalingam has been in the explosive division of the LTTE.

Sri Lanka's request has been sent to Paris police through International Police, defense sources said.
