* Western and Southern Provincial Councils of Sri Lanka dissolved

Jan 12, Colombo: The Western and Southern Provincial Councils will be dissolved from midnight today, the government sources said.

Chief Minister of the Western Province Prasanna Ranatunga has said that a request for dissolution of the Western Provincial Council has been submitted to the Governor of the Western Province Alevi Maulana.

Secretary to the Western Province Governor told local media that the Western Provincial Council will be dissolved at midnight Sunday.

Ranatunga told the state-run radio SLBC that the Governor will issue a communiqué on the dissolution of the Western Provincial Council soon.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister of the Southern Province Shan Wijeyalal de Silva said yesterday a written request was submitted for the dissolution of the Council.

Accordingly, the Governor of Southern Province Kumari Balasuriya said the Southern Province Council will also be dissolved at midnight Sunday.

The term of the Western Provincial Council is due to end on March 27 this year and the term of the Southern Provincial Council is to end on November 4.
