* Sri Lankan court further remands 40 Indian fishermen till January 24

Jan 10, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court Friday ordered to further remand 40 Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu until January 24.

The Sri Lankan Navy arrested the 40 fishermen on two separate occasions. One group of 22 fishermen from Jagadapattinam in Pudukottai District of Tamil Nadu was arrested for illegally fishing in the Northern seas off Delft Island on December 28 and six of their boats were seized.

Another group of 18 Indian fishermen were arrested and three boats were seized when they were engaged in illegal fishing in the Northern seas off Delft Island of Sri Lanka on 29th December 2013.

The Sri Lankan government has recently adopted a new policy of detaining Indian fishermen arrested for poaching in Sri Lankan waters for a long time and confiscating their boats to deter them from trespassing into Sri Lankan waters.
