Jan 08, Colombo: Statistics released by Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) Wednesday showed that Sri Lanka had met its tourist arrival target of 1.2 million for the year 2013.
The Authority has validated the tourist arrival figures for each month of last year and according to validated data 1,274,593 tourists have arrived in the island during 2013.
For the year tourist arrivals increased 26.7 percent from the 1,005,605 arrived in 2012.
For the month of December 2013tourist arrivals increased by 25.9 percent to 153,918 after a marginal increase of 0.2 percent in November.
The significantly low increase in arrival numbers for November has been attributed to the holding of Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Colombo during the month.
The SLTDA has validated the arrival data based on the statistics provided by the computer data collection method of Immigration and Emigration Department of Sri Lanka.
The newly established Electronic Data Capturing System, a joint effort of both the SLTDA and the Emigration and Immigration Department, was used to ensure an accurate representation of the tourist arrival figures.
The Sri Lanka Tourism has used the new system to validate 2013 arrival data. It is expected to reduce the errors incur when calculating the data manually. The system will come into full operation this year, the Government Information Department said.
