* MP Namal Rajapaksa mediates to resolve the fast by Sri Lanka death row prisoners
Mon, Jan 6, 2014, 10:25 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 06,Kandy: Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa today mediated to end the hunger strike launched by a group of death row prisoners at the high-security Bogambara prison in Kandy.

The prisoners ended the three-day fast after MP Rajapaksa met with them to discuss their woes.

The prisoners in the death row were on a fast on the roof top of the prison demanding either to implement the death sentence against them or to pardon them.

By yesterday afternoon, 45 prisoners had climbed on the roof joining the fast while the prisoners in the Ward D rejected food in support of the fasting prisoners. About 23 prisoners were on the roof of the Bogambara prison when MP Rajapaksa arrived at the prison.

Some of the prisoners were admitted to the hospital yesterday and today due to dehydration.

Sri Lankan courts sentence the perpetrators of serious crimes to death but the prisons have not carried out any executions since 1976.
