* Tropical storm One strikes Sri Lanka

Jan 05, Colombo: Tropical storm One struck Sri Lanka Sunday at about 11:30 a.m. local time (06:00 GMT) Tropical Storm Risk (TSR) reported.

According to the data supplied by the US Navy and Air Force Joint Typhoon Warning Center to Reuters the point of landfall was near 9.3 N, 81.8 E.

One brought 1-minute maximum sustained winds to the region of around 74 km/h (46 mph). Wind gusts in the area may have been considerably higher.

Sri Lanka issued a timely weather alert ahead of the storm and warned the people in the Northern coastal areas living within 100 meters of the sea to evacuate as the sea waves can be as high as 3 meters.
