* Sri Lanka's provincial councils have no power on direct international flights, Minister clarifies
Wed, Feb 19, 2014, 10:21 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 19, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Minister of Civil Aviation Priyankara Jayaratne stressed that the provincial councils are not empowered to take decisions on direct international air services to the country.

He said that the aviation industry comes under the authority of the central government and provincial councils are not mandated to have power over air travel.

The Minister clarified these facts in response to a report that the Northern Provincial Council passed a resolution demanding direct flights from Trincomalee and Palaly to India.

Northern Provincial Council member of Tamil National Alliance (TNA) M.K. Sivajilingam has told local media that the Council has passed the resolution calling for direct flights from the northern and eastern locations.

Another resolution was passed calling for the Kankasanthurai harbor to be used as a commercial port, the Council member had said.
