* Sri Lanka leftist party leader to appear in police on 15th for filing false nomination
Tue, Feb 11, 2014, 09:56 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 11, Colombo: The leader of leftist Nava Sama Samaja Party (NSSP) Lanka Dr. Wickramabahu Karunaratne will appear in police on February 15th for questioning over the submission of false nominations to upcoming provincial council elections.

The Police have summoned Dr. Karunaratne to appear in the Gampaha Police Station today for questioning over the alleged election fraud of nominating nonexistent candidates from the party. However, he said that he had been asked to appear on the 15th.

The leftist party leader will be questioned on submitting nominations for made-up candidates from the party to contest for Gampaha district at the next month's Western Provincial Council elections.

According to the police the NSSP has filed nominations for 43 people and out of those 15 of the names and addresses provided in the list were false.

It is expected that Dr. Karunaratne might be arrested for election fraud.

The police launched the investigation after the election officials in the Gampaha District of the Western Province brought the fraud to the attention of the police.

Police media spokesman Ajith Rohana said that the charge against the party is serious since it raises funds from foreign donors.
