* No right for military to acquire private property in the North, Defense Ministry informs Lands Minister

Feb 11, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Defense Ministry has informed the Lands Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon that the military has not been mandated to acquire private lands in the Northern Province.

The Lands Minister has reportedly said at a meeting at the Jaffna District Secretariat that compensation would be paid for the private lands taken over by the government before March 15.

Tennakoon has said that a 12-member committee has been appointed to resolve land issues in the Jaffna District.

The Lands Ministry has received some 7,566 complaints from residents in the Northern Province on land matters.

The government in line with the recommendations in the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) report has gathered data on identifying the lands, enumerating the number of land disputes and collecting facts about the landless.

The Minister has said that people who didn't have lands would be permitted to resettle on crown land at Maruthankerny.
