* Sri Lanka police to question party leader for nominating fake candidates for provincial elections

Feb 10, Colombo: A political party leader in Sri Lanka has been called to the police for questioning over for including false names in the in the nominations list of his party for the upcoming provincial council elections.

The Police have called the Nava Sama Samaja Party (NSSP) Leader, Dr. Wickramabahu Karunaratne to appear in the Gampaha Police Station tomorrow for questioning over the alleged election fraud of nominating nonexistent candidates from the party.

The police launched the investigation after the election officials in the Gampaha District of the Western Province brought the fraud to the attention of the police.

The Gampaha Assistant Elections Commissioner Sunil Senaratne had filed a complaint stating that the nomination list included false names and details.

Upon investigation the police had discovered that 15 of the names and addresses provided in the list were false. The party has filed nominations for 43 people.

An attorney and a justice of peace who had confirmed the information in the nominations list with an affidavit have also been called in for questioning at the Gampaha Police Station tomorrow, local media reported.
