* Indian Coast Guard arrests 25 Sri Lankan fishermen

Feb 10, Chennai: Indian Coast Guard today said it had apprehended 25 Sri Lankan fishermen last night for allegedly fishing in Indian waters off Karaikal in Puducherry in Tamil Nadu.

The Sri Lankan fishermen have been arrested on charges of trespass and illegal fishing in Indian waters, Indian media reports said.

According to ICG, the Sri Lankan fishermen were illegally fishing in Indian waters 48 nautical miles east of Velankanni and the Sri Lankans were engaged in the activity over the last two to three days.

The Indian Coast Guard has also seized five boats and 5,000 kilograms of fish from them.

The boats and the fishermen have been handed over to the Coastal Security Group of the Tamil Nadu police in Chennai.
