* Russian delegation meets Sri Lanka's External Affairs Minister

Feb 06, Colombo: A senior delegation of the Russian parliament Duma led by its Deputy Chairman and Vice-Speaker Sergey Zheleznjak met with Sri Lanka's External Affairs Minister Professor G.L. Peiris Wednesday and held discussions.

The Minister and the Russian parliamentary leader held detailed discussions on the progress made in Sri Lanka in all sectors since the achievement of peace and stability, and courses of action currently being implemented, the Ministry said in a statement today.

Prof. Peiris referred to his discussions in New York with Mr. Sergey Leurov, Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in November last year, and at the Foreign Ministry in Moscow previously.

The delegation also met with the Deputy Speaker of the Sri Lankan parliament Chandima Weerakkody yesterday and assured their government's full support to Sri Lanka in its efforts to face challenges posed by the international community.

Deputy Speaker Zheleznjak-led delegation arrived in the island on Monday on a three day official visit. They participated in Sri Lanka's 66th Independence Celebrations Tuesday in Kegalle.

The other members of the delegation were Valery S. Seleznuv, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Property, Mikhail V. Yemelyanov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Economic Policy, and Valery V. Fadeev, Chief Adviser to the Division on Relations with Foreign Parliaments.
