Feb 06, Colombo: National executive committee member of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP), Ferouza Muzammil has resigned from the party after the UNP had failed to give her nominations to contest from the Colombo District at the forthcoming Western Provincial Council election.
Muzammil, who is the wife of UNP Mayor of Colombo, A.J.M. Muzammil, has sent her resignation letter to party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe stating that she will be resigning from the party with immediate effect.
She has said that she would not have anything to do with party matters in future.
The party is rattled with the unilateral decisions taken by the leader in selecting candidates for nominations to the elections for Western and Southern provincial council elections scheduled to be held on March 29.
Yesterday, UNP Colombo District MP Ravi Karunanayaka and former UNP Galle District MP Vajira Abeywardena resigned from the party's nominations committee over disagreements in finalizing the nominations lists.
The UNP parliamentarian from Kalutara District nearly assaulted Wickremasinghe at the parliament complex yesterday over a dispute in the selection of candidates for nominations from the MP's district.
