* Sri Lanka's Elections Department receives complaints even before nominations conclude

Feb 03, Colombo: The Elections Department of Sri Lanka has received a large number of complaints in the run up to the Western and Southern Provincial Council elections.

The Department has reportedly received 40 complaints of alleged election law violations even before the handing of nominations is concluded.

The complaints have been received from the day of dissolution of the two provincial councils to date.

The Department has said that 16 complaints that were received were on transfers and promotions, six were about the illegal use of government vehicles for campaigning and seven others were about the illegal display of campaign posters and banners.

Election monitors have also said that there have been many violations of election laws especially with regard to the misuse of public property for election campaign work.
