Tue, Apr 22, 2014, 05:46 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Apr 22, Colombo: To celebrate Earth Day 2014, U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Michele Sison met with Sri Lankan Girl Guides as they launched their "Earth Day Ambassadors" program.

Sixty girls from Girl Guides chapters in Jaffna, Kandy and Colombo were selected to be "Earth Day Ambassadors". The participants researched and scored their respective city's environmental 'green' ranking, and will now collectively build an action plan to improve their city's rating.

"Every day is Earth Day; we all have the responsibility to do our part and keep this planet in good shape," Ambassador Sison said while speaking at the Earth Day ceremony.

"In partnering with Girl Guides on this initiative, US Embassy and the American Center are focused not only on these bright and motivated sixty "Earth Day Ambassadors" and their achievements, but also on partnering with Sri Lankan communities across this beautiful island. The U.S. Embassy stands ready to offer continued support for activities like this, to help protect and enhance Sri Lanka's precious natural environment," the Ambassador said.

The program will track the performance of the sixty "Earth Day Ambassadors" over the next year as they recommend areas for environmental protection in their communities and carry out action plans. The American Corners in Jaffna, Kandy and Colombo will hold quarterly check-ins with the Earth Day Ambassadors, and will hold an annual review next Earth Day, 2015.
