* Sri Lanka First Lady attends International Autism Seminar in Malaysia

Apr 21, Kuala Lumpur: Sri Lanka's First Lady Shiranthi Wickremasinghe Rajapaksa has arrived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia today to attend the 2014 International Seminar on Autism.

Malaysian Deputy Minister of Education Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching welcomed the Sri Lankan First Lady at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport this morning.

Later this afternoon, she is scheduled to meet her Malaysian counterpart Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor at the prime minister's official residence.

The two-day seminar will be inuagurated by the Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak Tuesday at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre.

It is organized by Program Permata with the cooperation of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and non-governmental organization, Autism Speaks.

The Seminar themed "Autism Is Not A Tragedy, Ignorance Is" will focus on quality intervention for autistic children and bring together teachers, lecturers, researchers, professionals, government officials, and service providers.

It would also be the platform for implementation of the Permata Kurnia Programme on early intervention for autistic children, in May next year.

About 1,500 international and local participants are expected to attend the seminar. Among confirmed regional speakers at the seminar is Dr. Samanmali Priyanga Sumanasena Kularatne of University of Kelaniya, and Dr. Cheryl Dissanayake, Director of Olga Tennison Autism Research Centre at La Trobe University, Australia.
