* Ten killed when tractor falls into a canal in north central Sri Lanka

Apr 18, Polonnaruwa: At least ten people were killed Friday when the tractor they were traveling in fell into an irrigation canal in Polonnaruwa, north central Sri Lanka, the police said.

The accident happened when the tractor, attached with a trailer, transporting a group of people for a New Year celebration lost control and toppled into an irrigation canal in Aluthoya, Aralaganwila of Polonnaruwa.

The dead include four women, two men, two children and an infant, Police spokesman SSP Ajith Roahan said.

Another 8 people have been injured and admitted to the Aralaganwila Hospital. Two of the injured have been transferred to Polonnaruwa General Hospital.
